I'm Charley Bradbury, founder and owner of Penny Lane Virtual Assistant Services. I specialise in helping tradespeople and small construction businesses grow by providing expert support in bookkeeping and general office management. With over 20 years of experience—including the past 10 as a VA—and five years running a construction business with my husband, I have firsthand insight into the unique challenges of the industry.
Who or what inspired you to become a VA?
My children were my inspiration. I became a VA about 10 years ago after unexpectedly becoming a single mum to three young children. I needed a career that offered flexibility to fit around their schedules, and that’s what led me to the world of virtual assistance. It turned out to be the perfect fit, allowing me to support businesses while still being there for my family.
Have you had any support starting up as a VA?
My family have always been super supportive and I’ve met some amazing mentors along the way who I’ve been able to lean on for advice.
What has been your highlight since starting your business?
For 10 years I was too scared to take my business full time, and always had a part time job on the side. A year ago I decided to make the leap into running my business full time. I so wish I had done it sooner.
What was your biggest challenge?
Having to make the decision to let go of a client who was literally draining my energy on a daily basis. I’m naturally an empath so that taught me I have to have boundaries in my business.
What advice would you offer other new or aspiring VAs?
Boundaries for sure – as I mentioned above if you don’t protect yourself and your personal time you can find yourself becoming overwhelmed. Set your working hours and do not respond outside of those hours (unless it's an emergency of course).
What tools/apps/software can’t you live without?
Wavebox
What is next for you and your business?
In 2025 I want to take my business to the next level by taking on a handful of associates.
What is the ultimate goal for your business?
To work smarter not harder. I want Penny Lane to be the go-to business for all Hampshire based trades people.
Were there any times you wanted to give up? What kept you going?
For sure – there have been times when some clients have been so demanding that I’ve questioned if I can actually do this. What kept me going was reminding myself that I am doing the things in their business that they can’t do. I am the expert in my field and that’s why they use me.
What is the biggest misconception you had about being a VA before you became one?
That VAs were poorly paid people in the Philippines.
Is there anything you would change about your VA journey?
Yes, I would have gone full time sooner.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Walking my dog, spending time with my husband and kids and going to the theatre.
What business book / podcast have you read / listened to most recently? Would you recommend it?
The Let them Theory by Mel Robbins. I would most definitely recommend it.
