Meet the VA - Emma Plumb of Emma, Your Virtual Assistant

With over 20 years of experience in customer service, payment technology, digital marketing, and business management, I’ve built a career focused on helping businesses thrive. Originally from the UK, I’ve called the beautiful island of Mauritius home for the past 20 years. Balancing life as a mum of two and running my own business, I’ve learnt the value of effective organisation, adaptability, and a touch of creativity.

I founded Emma Your Virtual Assistant to empower female entrepreneurs, mumpreneurs, and small business owners to focus on what they do best - growing their business - while I handle the day-to-day tasks behind the scenes.

Throughout my career, I’ve refined my ability to solve problems, streamline processes, and build meaningful relationships. I combine professionalism and efficiency with a personal touch, ensuring my clients feel supported and confident in their business operations.

I understand the challenges of balancing work, life, and ambition. That’s why I created a service that allows business owners to focus on what truly matters. Whether it’s scaling your business, spending more time with family, or simply finding breathing space, I’m here to help make it happen.

Who or what inspired you to become a Virtual Assistant? I stumbled on someone in a Facebook group who was having a session at her house to tell people about what a Virtual Assistant is and what they do. It was just after the pandemic and although I was still employed there was a sense of uncertainty, I was curious if it was something I could do so went along to listen. She made it sound really easy, exciting and it made me think I could do it alongside my full time employment.

Have you had any support starting up as a VA?

Yes, the same person who introduced me was also a coach and I attended her free workshops and masterclasses on becoming a VA. In the end I joined her 3 month course to finally become a Virtual Assistant. My employment status was changing so this was it for me, I needed to do this or find full-time employment. Not only did she help and support me throughout the course she helped me by only taking a small financial amount for the course up front and has allowed me to pay off an amount afterwards.

What has been your highlight since starting your business?

Not sure if there has been a real highlight starting my business as it’s been a challenge. I have met some good people in the process and have become part of a bit of a community with the other ladies who were on the course.  I feel like I have learned a whole new world with Virtual Assistance and it’s a fast-changing environment. It's great that one day I can be helping someone with their chat support, supporting their customer's orders and the next day I can be uploading new coaching videos to your client's new app that is in development.   I can also use everything I have learned in the last 20 years in my corporate life to support people who are just starting out. It's satisfying to be able to help and use my experience.

What was your biggest challenge?

I think the biggest challenge was that I found it and still find it challenging to find clients. I do as suggested but something still isn’t right and the clients aren’t easily falling into place. This could’ve been as I was thinking or hoping it would be easy, I had high expectations that I would be fully booked and earning 5 figures within 6 months of launching my business.

What advice would you offer other new or aspiring VAs?

Keep going, be consistent and don’t be disheartened.

What tools/apps/software can’t you live without?

ChatGPT or AI equivalent. Google Workspace. Social Media Platforms, Canva.

Were there any times you wanted to give up? What kept you going?

Yes, I still think am I doing the right thing, can I do it but keep going as I have no choice. I am doing this for my family and how our life works, I can’t go back to a corporate 9-5 job. The idea of it makes me feel suffocated.

What three words would you use to describe yourself, and why?

Super Mum, consistent, resilient.

What is the biggest misconception you had about being a VA before you became one?

That it’s really easy to find clients. Probably the same as everyone who starts the journey.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I have a young family and I love doing things with them, making memories. I love films and don’t get to go to the cinema as often as I would like to. I also like paper crafts, it’s a good hobby and way to stop thinking about where the next client is coming from.

Who would you most like to meet, and why? What would you tell them?

Laura Adlington – Bake off contestant and body-positive ambassador. I would just like to talk to her and say thank you for helping so many women be proud of who they are and what they look like.

What is next for you and your business?

Learn more, I want to be able to understand more on videos/reels so that I can create or edit them simply. SEO is really important to content creation so I want to keep understanding more about it. Of course next is to find clients that hire me long term rather than for projects.

What is the ultimate goal for your business?

To make me and my clients happy.
