Hi I’m Mary, a marketing virtual assistant providing copywriting and website management services to a variety of clients. I began my freelancing journey at the end of 2023 and I’ve enjoyed working with a range of different industries. I love all things to do with websites, especially search engine optimisation.Â
Before starting my business, I worked in digital marketing in both a corporate and agency setting for the past 3 years. This gave me great insights into the processes of working directly with clients and working inside a larger company.Â
Who or what inspired you to become a VA?
I started my business as I wanted to help business owners gain greater visibility online and to help improve their websites so that they can be found easier on search engines. My passion is websites and copywriting and I love helping peoples stories come to life on the page.Â
Have you had any support starting up as a VAÂ
I have been lucky to have support from my family. It was a big jump going into the freelancing world and they have always encouraged me to go for it.Â
What has been your highlight since starting your business?
The highlight has always been networking and interacting with clients. I still remember my first networking event, I met so many amazing business owners and I felt really inspired. There was a lot of knowledge shared and everyone was so collaborative together. Â
What was your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge has been imposter syndrome, there are some days where it gets me down. I have met some lovely VAs during my time freelancing and joined groups that have always helped me feel supported on those days.Â
What advice would you offer other new or aspiring VAs?
My advice would be to join VA groups on social media! There are some great ones on Facebook that always make me feel inspired and it’s good for building your connections. I find that through these groups you can get chances to collaborate with other VAs and ask questions if you’re ever stuck on anything.
What tools/apps/software can’t you live without?
Notion is the main one for me that I can’t live without, I plan everything in there from my weekly to-do list to my social media calendar. Another one is the website builder Wix that I used to build my own website. It's amazing to use and it helps you make sure your search engine optimisation is good. I feel that I need to include Canva on this list as well as I create all my social graphics and videos in there, it has so much versatility. Â
What is next for you and your business?
My plan is to keep growing my business in the next few years as I’m still relatively new to the freelancing/virtual assistant world. I would like to do more collaborations and I’ve even written my first guest blog.
What is the ultimate goal for your business?
My ultimate goal is to continue supporting businesses and grow their online presence. In the future, I would like to increase my service offering to include website building.Â
What has surprised you about becoming a VA?Â
I’ve been surprised by the amount of support from other business owners! I’ve really enjoyed connecting with others and meeting new people.Â
What is the biggest misconception you had about being a VA before you became one?
I didn’t know the full range of services that you could offer, I thought being a VA meant only offering admin services so I was surprised to find out that there’s such a huge range that you can offer!Â
Is there anything you would change about your VA journey?
I would have liked to have started sooner! I was worried at first about starting my freelancing journey as it’s so different from working a 9-5. I enjoy the flexibility that you get with creating your own schedule as well as working on all kinds of different projects! One of my favourite things about marketing is the diverse range of industries you get to learn about and create content for.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, you can find me talking about coeliac disease and looking for new gluten-free foods as well as gaming! Having coeliac disease has become a big part of my life so I spend time raising awareness for it online and helping others with their gluten-free journeys.Â
