Hi I’m Mary, a marketing virtual assistant providing copywriting and website management services to a variety of clients beginning my freelancing journey at the end of 2023. I love all things to do with websites, especially search engine optimisation.

Before starting my business, I worked in digital marketing in both a corporate and agency setting for the past 3 years. I started my business to help other business owners with their websites to improve their visibility online. My passion is making your online presence cohesive and in line with your business goals.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search engine optimisation is the process of making your website rank better on search engines like Google and Bing. You achieve this by making improvements to the structure, usability and contents of your website. Implementing SEO can drive more traffic to your website helping you grow.

  1. Think about the customer journey through your website

It’s important to make sure that your website is accessible for your customers. You want to have a good user experience so that they follow an easy journey that flows from the home page throughout your site. For example, your ideal customer journey may look like navigating from the home page to your about page, then to your service page and finally to your contact page. This way your customers will see all the important information and you will have a good internal linking structure which will help search engines understand your site better.

  1. Ensure all pages have internal linking

Leading on from my first point, Google may not even look at web pages that have no internal links to them. This is why it’s important to make sure that the pages you want indexed by search engines have other pages linking to them, otherwise, they may not appear in search.

  1. Optimise your website’s URLs

It’s best to keep your URLs short and sweet and to make sure that they’re relevant to the content on the page which will help search engines like Google better understand the contents of your webpage. Try to include the main keywords that you want the page to rank for. An example is if you want to be found locally it can be a good idea to create a location page detailing your services in a specific area and include the area in the URL of the page.  It’s also best practice to only use lowercase letters in your URLs.

  1. Improve your website speed

Did you know that slow site speed could be the reason that your website isn’t ranking as well on search engines? A website that takes forever to load can drive customers away resulting in a higher bounce rate which will affect your rankings negatively.  One way to quickly improve this is to take a look at your page size and if you have any images, resize and compress them.

  1. Optimise your website for mobile devices

Your website is likely to be looked at on mobile, especially if you’re sharing links to it from your social media profiles so making sure it’s accessible is key. Most website building tools, like Wix, will allow you to preview and edit the mobile version of your site.

Small changes matter!

Every small step you take to improve your website will have a compounding effect in the long run. It’s always best to see what quick wins you can start with today and to keep working on it over time. I hope this has helped give you some ideas to implement on your website to help your search engine results.
