If you're a Virtual Assistant and have ever found yourself thinking: “Surely there’s an easier way to do this…” I can promise you that you're not alone. Running a VA business is as empowering as it is flexible, but it can also be overwhelming, isolating, and confusing at times (especially when you’re doing all the things alone). That’s where working with a Virtual Assistant coach can be a game-changer.
But what exactly is a VA coach? Do you really need one? And how do you know if it’s the right time?
So many questions! But don’t worry, let’s break it all down.
What is a Virtual Assistant coach?
A Virtual Assistant coach is someone who helps you grow your VA business, not just in terms of income, but also in confidence, clarity, and structure. They’re hopefully someone who has walked the walk, knows the challenges VAs face first-hand, and has the tools to help you reach your goals faster.
Where a mentor might give advice based on their own experiences, a coach is trained to help you find the answers that are right for you. A great coach recognises that a one-size-fits-all template would not work for everyone. Instead, they calmly ask the right questions, help you explore your current mindset, offer accountability whilst providing you with the tools to build a business that works for your unique lifestyle, strengths, and values.
What should you look for in a Virtual Assistant coach?
Sadly, coaching is an unregulated industry, so it’s extra important to do your homework beforehand.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing a coach:
● Are they accredited? Have they completed a recognised coaching qualification? Are they registered with a professional body (like the ICF)?
● Do they have coaching training and experience in the VA world? It’s worth checking what they’ve done before becoming a coach. Have they been a VA themselves? Are they still a VA?
● Do they offer pure coaching, mentoring, or a mix of both? If you’re looking for someone to tell you what to do step-by-step, that’s more of a mentor. If you’re after mindset work, accountability, and coaching frameworks, that’s where a qualified coach comes in.
● Do you feel safe with them? This one’s huge. Your coaching relationship should feel supportive, honest, and always, non-judgemental.
Why might you need a Virtual Assistant coach?
Running your own business means you wear all the hats: CEO, admin, marketing manager, accountant, customer service… and sometimes therapist, too.
A qualified coach helps you:
● Build confidence in your skills, pricing and boundaries
● Stay focused and accountable to your goals
● Break through mindset blocks (like imposter syndrome or fear of visibility)
● Find your niche or define your ideal client
● Streamline your systems and improve your work-life balance
And let’s not forget the emotional side. It can be lonely doing this solo. A coach gives you support, structure, and someone in your corner who truly gets it.
In fact, according to the International Coaching Federation, 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence, and over 70% benefit from improved work performance and relationships.
So… do you need a coach, a mentor, or a bit of both?
This is where things get interesting. Because for many VAs, it’s not a case of either/or, it’s both.
Sometimes you want the step-by-step support of someone who’s been there and done it (mentoring). Other times, you need someone to help you unpack what’s going on in your head and give you the confidence to trust your own decisions (coaching).
This is why I offer a hybrid approach, combining accredited coaching tools with practical, real-world VA experience (I have walked the walk). So whether you need help with mindset, marketing, or mapping out your next move, you’ve got a safe, supportive and experienced space to work through it.
So, do you need a Virtual Assistant coach? Maybe not. But could working with one make a massive difference in your growth, mindset and success? Absolutely.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to go next in your VA journey this might be your sign to find the support that helps you move forward with confidence.
